From Advertiser Weekly To Newspaper Daily

The Chinese Shipping List and Advertiser is the first modern newspaper in Shanghai as well as in China.With the treaties the western capitalist imposed on China after the First Opinium War,China was forced to open the door.Shanghai,as one of the first four ports,accelarated the process of modernization. The Chinese Shipping List and Advertiser itself is the outproduct of the process. From the perspective of the Chinese Shipping List and Advertiser,the thesis analyzes some characteristics of the early Chinese newspaper.It conveyed lots of commercials,promoting the development of the market and the prosperity of Shanghai;it published the news,influencing the public opinions;it introduced the western advanced science and technology ,contributing to the process of Chinese modernization;it popularized the common sense of news,innovating the news work and nourishing the first readers and writers of newspapers.After the Industrial Revolution and the world market formed,the pre-capitalism production mode of China connected the world market firstly by foreign trade.Thus the foreign trade and the other departments closely related to it ,such as transportation,insurance,finance,warehouse developed first,which played an important part to the rise of Chinese capitalism.Through the research on the Advertisements,news,literal works in the Chinese Shipping List and Advertiser,I try to explain the economical,social,cultural changes in Shanghai during the period of 1862-1872.
