Networked Virtual Instrument (NVI) is an important direction of development of virtual instrument. Ethernet is the most widely used network technology, and it has advantages in applications and price. So the best solution for the networking of VI is ethernet.Firstly, a follow-up study about the concept and the netwoking of VI is did, then the characteristics and architecture of hardware and software of NVI technology are analyzed, especially the bus interface technology, and the functions and directions of research of NVI are summaried. Sencondly, an ethernet interface is designed. The design uses an EPM570GT100C4 of Altera's MAXII series' FPGA chips. Coworking with the integrated chip of W3150A+ for the exclusive protocols and the physical layer chip RTL8201, the interface successfully achieved ethernet data transmission. Finally, the Networked Virtual Oscilloscope is described as an example of the NVI. This Networked Virtual Oscilloscope uses the ethernet interface to obtain data. The OS of Networked Virtual Oscilloscope is developed on the platform of LabVIEW, server and client softwares included. The network transmission technology DataSocket is used to realize a centralized NVI.A large amount of information is collected for the depth analysis of the NVI, and an application of NVI is implemented by the design of the ethernet interface and the Networked Virtual Oscilloscope. The NVI can be applied to areas such as online teaching and remote mearurment.
