Leaks from the pipelines can not only lead to a great deal of product losses. So, leak detection and location is necessary and important for us. Discovering the oil pipeline leaks and pinpoint the leak location n real-timely, is an important means to protect the pipeline safety, and it has become an important issue in pipeline security technology nowadays. As the constant requirements improvement of the monitoring, more and more technology need to be perfected.Starting with the importance of pipeline transportation in economic development, this paper introduce the current methods of oil pipeline leakage detection and localization and analyse their principles, advantages and disadvantages. The article designs a petroleum pipeline detecting system based the ARM processor,"negative pressure wave method" and GPRS technology. The system can monitor the pipeline leakiness from long-distance visually and real-timely. The system mainly adopts a "negative pressure wave" method for leak detection, through the ARM9 control pressure collection elements, and GPRS wireless data transmission, analysis data on PC, and then location the pipeline leaks.This design according to the principle of conservation of momentum and mass, gives negative pressure wave velocity formula of buried pipe; improves the relationship formula of the leakage point location with time. Then, the design uses MATLAB to simulate the fault pressure data acquired from the experimental table. After the pressure curves being denoise by wavelet analysis method, the design detects and localizes leakage point. Simulation results shows that this method is effective and reasonable, small errors. Finally, designs the core of the system control and wireless transmission part of the software. Embedded Linux system has portability, strong networking capabilities, outstanding GNU compiler tool, free of charge, open-source advantages. This system is convenient, real-time, in the related fields of oil pipeline detection has a certain reference value.
