Electromagnetic pulse, through the antenna, cable,gaps and so on, causes serious threat by coupling with very high energy into the command, communications, control, computer and intelligence systems. So the research of the engineering theory and technology on electromagnetic pulse protection have become a hot spots in the world.This paper firstly analyzes the characteristics of typical electromagnetic pulse, including the electrostatic discharge electromagnetic pulse, lightning electromagnetic impulse and high-altitude nuclear electromagnetic pulse. And the wave spectrum characteristics of the typical electromagnetic pulse experimental current is studied in order to provide the basis for electromagnetic pulse protection. Electromagnetic pulse coupling of long conductor have been studied in depth. Some rules on electromagnetic pulse coupling of long conductor have been gotten. Then the characteristics of various types of surge protective devices are analyzed. And the dynamic characteristics of varistors are researched. The equivalent model of varistor is established and the response characteristics of the electromagnetic of the simulations of varistors are tested. The mechanism of co-ordination of surge protective devices and the impact of the inductance of transmission in co-ordination of surge protective devices are studied by the theory and simulation. Finally, the EMP filter against electromagnetic pulse has been designed.
