Because multi-beam sonar can measure the depth of the sea and image the undersea object, it has a great value in both military and civil fields.Based on the embedded processing architecture of virtex-5FX, research on the bidirectional high-speed communication between multi-beam sonar and data server is conducted. Gigabyte Ethernet and ComPort are two important aspects of this research. Based on the theory of gigabyte Ethernet's PHY & MAC layer and the embedded Ethernet protocol stack, gigabyte Ethernet data transfer is realized with TEMAC core and virtex-5. A ComPort IP core with LocalLink support is designed by analyzing ComPort and LocalLink interface. Moreover, two ComPort data streams are received synchronously in the core, and the "store-and-forward" approach for the second ComPort data stream is also discussed. DMA and interrupt are used to receive ComPort data to insure the high-speed data moving. Finally, the high-speed data transfer system is built in PowerPC with combination of gigabyte Ethernet and ComPort by data flow schedule strategy. As demonstrated by theoretical analysis and experimental results, the embedded data transfer system realized in this article can support data transfer at a maximal speed of 193Mbit/s. In the reliability test of multi-beam sonar, the reliable data transfer system works in a stable way. Each performance indicator meets the predefined requirements.
