Presently electricity utilities make use of a number of inspection tools to survey their transmission lines and electrical distribution equipment. Visible and ultraviolet cameras are the latest visual diagnostic tools available to utilities to identify potential failures on electrical equipment. After researching the UVC radiation in solar blind spectrum, a proper electronic hardware and software frame is chosen to realize an embedded dual-spectrum image acquisition and data processing system with such functions as ultra-violet and visible image acquisition, processing, fusion, displaying, storage, and etc..Based on the DSP and FPGA hardware platform, a system is designed to collect images from both visible and ultraviolet channels. Moreover, it performs many fuctions such as image format transformation, image fusion and analysis. For detecting the weak signal of corona, an ultra-violet detector is imported in the form of an image intensifier tube with a Cesium-Telluride photocathode, which is competent for single photon counting. For acquiring visible images, a 3-million-pixel high-speed CMOS is implemented to assure definition of images and running speed of the system. The real-time software system is built on Reference Framework 5 (RF5), since it supports multi-channel and multi-algorithm system, which is convenient for users to build up software frames and add new algorithms. The processed images can be either displayed on two LCDs, or compressed and saved for further analysis. Finally, several methods of program debugging and system adjustment are introduced. Compared to the imported device of the same area, the experimental results in the field show that the designed system has outstanding performance in the detection of corona radiation of high-voltage electricity equipments.
