With fast increasing of IP-based data services, the exigent problem for China Unicom is how to satisfy the requirement of transmission capacity and bandwidth. The appearance and development of DWDM turn more transmission capacity of optical cable in existence into real. The dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) uses resources at present and makes per fiber transmit more signals, so the communication capacity is improved very much and the cost of building and running is decreased.The paper introduces this topic research goal and the significance, optical fiber communication and DWDM principle , parts of system, describes the key technologies for DWDM systems, including light source technology, optical amplification technology, forward error correction technology, dynamic gain equalization, dispersion compensation technology. The factors, Dispersion, Non-linear effect and The fiber-optic loss, which affect the system, are discussed. Introduces detailed the design of DWDM transmission net, including integration design, the calculation of the most relay distance, the management of transmission net, the protection of transmission net, the performance transmission. The paper combines the real requirement for China Unicom Shi tai trunk transmission system project, bring out the specific project of construction, including the number of the wavelength, the speed of the transmission, the style of he fiber, optical amplifier settings, dispersion compensation module settings and OSNR calculation etc.. The DWDM system sets up an integrated and united transmitting network, which is very large in capacity, very high in speed and very efficient. The DWDM system has made use of fiber sources at present, adds SDH equipments without thinking about fiber sources in future. DWDM technology is fully applied to the Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan in China Unicom, provides practical experience for building rapid and efficient high-speed backbone transmission network by DWDM technology in the optical cable network.
