EPON (Ethernet over Passive Optical Network), as Ethernet-based optical network technology, combines both the advantages of PON (Passive Optical Network) technology and Ethernet technology. However, various EPON equipment manufacturers have their own EMSs (Element Management Systems). And NMS (Network Management Systems) of different manufacturers have great difference in use. In order to be managed by the telecom operators, the EPON EMS can meet the requirement as that the equipment manufactures must implement their own north interface to achieve integrated network management system on distributed management systems. So there is an industry demand for a full-featured, commercially available, scalable and non-proprietary network management solution, where multi-vendor, multi-technology management systems can interoperate in an open architecture environment. That is what we are researching for and want to resolve—the network management model for multi-technology optical transport networks based on CORBA (Common Object Request Architecture). With the research on the relation TMF814 (Tele Management Forum) series standards and the management environment of the domestic optical transport networks, this paper provides a network management model implementing north interface for EPON based on CORBA and TMF814. We used the ORB (Object Request Broker) of ACE (Adaptive Communication Environment)-TAO implement the system. ACE-TAO is a freely available, open-source, and standards-compliant real-time implementation of CORBA that provides efficient, predictable, and scalable QoS (Quality of Service) end -to end. The paper also researches the application of naming services and notification services of CORBA to the model.
