Evolution of embedded technology, operating system, network, database and automated fingerprint identification has brought unprecedented opportunity to electronic engineers. The comprehensive applications of those technologies in engineering have been gone with the trend of times and greatly improved the work efficiency. Proceeding from the actual demand of our department and applying comprehensively the above technologies, this article described designing and implementing a long-distance fingerprint automatic entrance guard system based on the Intranet and embedded system. Modular methodology is used to design the whole system. PXA255, an embedded system, is used for the entrance control and specific data acquisition in the front-end, then data transmission is accomplished based on the network of TCP/IP, finally database system is used for the management of the information of the armory.The article introduced the background of the system design at first, then designed and implemented an exquisite embedded hardware which can meet the requirements based on the PXA255 platform of Intel Company. It also studied the problem that addressing of the U-boot and loading the OS when migrating Linux to the platform. It implemented the driver for capturing the fingerprint based on GPIO interface, and gave specific parameter of the model according to the interface specifications of the hardware platform. Finally, the article introduced the implementation of a lightweight protocol based on TCP/IP for the reciprocal communications. A command set for the protocol was designed and implemented, and a management console of the armory based on the protocol was developed by using SQL Server in Visual C++.
