In the electronic product design, display module is often controlled by main controller of the product. Display part is not very important for large scale control product, but it should be ported when product updating. This increases development work volume. This thesis, against this situation, makes this part an independent display module. A smart LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) module is designed with dot-matrix LCD. The display module has the features of low cost, small size and scalability. This module fulfills display function, additional keyboard function and GPO (General Purpose Output) function, thus the main controller can focus on control function. By using this module, portable work will be easier when product updating, and the corresponding software, hardware, testing workload will be reduced, thus the time to market will be shorten.After analyzing and investigating the current application situation of liquid crystal devices and development platform of embedded system, the thesis, against application needs of display module, proposes a system hardware and software development platform based on ARM (Advanced RISC Machines) controller. According to modular design method, the design and implementation of the key functions of hardware and software are given. A set of simple, flexible and easy control communication commands are given. The downloading, storage and display format of font and bitmap are given. A file system based on EEPROM (Electrical Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) is given. Finally, a batch testing system based on PC windows OS and application of this module are given.
