First, the thesis introduces PSTN and IP interoperability in the development of the next generation network and takes out the important role it plays in the development process and the deficiencies of existing solutions on the relay server model. Firstly, the trunk server can act as the Signaling Gateway between the PSTN networks and the IP networks to translate the SS7/PRI/No.1 signaling to the SIP/H.323 protocol or reverse direction. Secondly, the server can act as the Signaling Translation Server between SIP and H.323 protocol. Thirdly, the server can also be used as the Media Gateway to implementation of the converting PCM into RTP packetsThe second part of the paper analyzes the trunk server architecture and expounded the concrete realization of the principle and trunk server program. In the third part it describes the design solutions and the implementation mode of driver software of the trunk server detailed. Driver software mainly includes two parts, the signaling transceivers of E1 lines and media transformation. In this part the paper introduces some important processing flows.In the last part the paper introduces some application solutions of the trunk server, and then analyses the vices and problems of the trunk server that are exposed in the process of practical applications. At last, some perfect solutions is put forward to deal with these problems.
