With the development of computer technology, various domestic consumer electronics products based on network has been coming in common family. A kind of digital family network called intelligent home is developing rapidly around the world. The wide range family network technology involves (Communication, Information Technology, etc) and the fierce competitions of technical fields, lead to the focus of technical standards which are the top of the technology competition.The UPnP Forum is one of the most widely supported organizations researching digital family network standard. The UPnP architecture takes full advantage of open TCP/IP and the Distributed Network Architecture of Web technology, fulfills the complete control and data transmission among the network equipments in families, offices and public places. This organization has formulates the detailed standard for 12 kinds of intelligent equipments, including the Residential Gateway Device which is the most important in digital home, also named Internet Gateway Device.This thesis proposes a solution using UPnP IGD methods after studying the function of Network Address Translation and its limitation in network application. Then, it gives a particular analysis to the composition and work principle of UPnP architecture and its IGD specification. Finally, an IGD control point and service module is designed and implemented according to real residential gateway system. The module bases on Linux operation system, fully comply with the UPnP architecture, has good compatibility. The thesis introduces the design details of the module, gives the testing methods and steps. The structure of the scheme is clear and the extensibility is good, it resolves the compatibility of various equipments and standards within home network and makes the other equipments or clients in home take advantage of UPnP to obtain accessing requests from external network. The module has been successfully implemented in a Home Gateway with embedded Linux operating system.
