As the growth of worldwide energy demand, the exploitation of offshore oil and gas has switched to deep water fields, consequently, people pay more and more attention to the development of ocean engineering. However, China's current research for mobile drilling platform design and construction technology is still in its initial stage, and the low efficiency of two-dimensional design method makes it difficult to meet the current design requirements. Therefore, advanced CAD technology must been apply to change the traditional two-dimensional design method and develop corresponding CAD softwares for mobile drilling platform. It will be a significant measure to improve the design level, shorten the design cycle, and reduce design costs.This paper studies how to apply three-dimensional CAD technology in the design of mobile drilling platform, and presents a proposal to develop the mobile drilling platform 3D design system based on SolidWorks, trying to find a solution of the current problems in mobile platform design which is heavy workload and low efficiency. An approach to implement this system is expounded in this paper: by the way of using VB.NET to redevelop SolidWorks and then created a private database for this system in SQL Server, a three-dimensional CAD system suitable for mobile drilling platform's design can be developed. In the end of this paper, a design example of submersible platform is showed to prove the practicality of this system in engineering.During the development process of three-dimensional design system for mobile drilling platform, the following items were investigated:(1) A private database was created for this system so that the whole design process can be completed in the database environment. In this way, it can centralize the management of the non-graphics data in the system, and reduce data redundancy.(2) Combined with three-dimensional model library and database, the three-dimensional visualization general arrangement design module and the structure parameterized modeling module were developed based on SolidWorks graphics platform. It not only improved the efficiency of mobile platform design but also provided accurate three-dimensional models for follow-up design.(3) A stability calculation method based on three-dimensional model is presented in this paper. The underwater model of mobile platform was created by SolidWorks in this system, so that the hydrostatic factors, intact stability, damaged stability and other performances can be figured out quickly. Compare with the traditional two-dimensional calculation method, the presented method has advantages in calculation speed and accuracy.(4) Based on the fifth-order Stokes wave theory, a wave load calculation module was developed, which can calculate the wave load of mobile platform rapidly and provide effective basis for follow-up design.
