Digital Signal Processor can be optimized for high efficiency, low-power operation and low cost. It plays an important role in the area of telecommunications and consumer electronics. The FT-C55LP with independence positive-direction design is a high performance and low power 16-bit fix-point programmable digital signal processor. In this paper, the Program Unit (PU) of FT-C55LP is designed and validated under the performance desire and limit condition, basing on the lucubration of FT-C55LP architecture.The proposed PU in this study is consisting of data exchange unit, program control unit and pipeline control unit. The PU produces the program address, controls the program executing path and state, and deals with the control instruction such as branch, condition, repetition and so on. It also initiates interrupt serving when an interrupt is requested and properly enabled and controls the pipeline as well as the protection. The special condition calculating logic and repetition controlling logic of PU in allusion to the instructions characteristic and the performance requirement as well as the power of FT-C55LP, is in order to improve the executing efficiency of condition instructions and repetition instructions in FT-C55LP availability. In addition, the FT-C55LP interrupt system designed and realized in PU can enhance the executing efficiency of digital signal arithmetic availability as well as the application field.The FT-C55LP has a pipeline with 12 states and the resource conflict is completely resolved by hardware pipeline protection mechanism. Therefore, the pipeline controlling logic is one of the most important parts in the design of FT-C55LP. The thesis discusses the disadvantage of some currency pipeline protection mechanism as well as the advantage during designing the hardware automatism pipeline protection mechanism. An effective pipeline protection mechanism basing on accessing source subsection is introduced after considering the characteristic of FT-C55LP pipeline and the claim of FT-C55LP performance as well as power. This pipeline protection mechanism has been enhancing the FT-C55LP performance and reducing the hardware complexity.At the end of this paper, the verification processing of the PU design, which droved by code coverage and function coverage, is performed. The results of simulation show that the Program Unit can fully meet the performance requirements of FT-C55LP as well as the function requirements.
