The wireless sensor networks can be defined as an autonomous, ad hoc system consisting of a collective of networked sensor nodes designed to intercommunicate via wireless radio. Typically, these nodes coordinate to perform a common task. Wireless sensor network is being used in a wide of variety of commercial and military applications and becomes a new research area of modern technology. In this thesis, the conceptions, key technologies and the structure of wireless sensor network are presented briefly. And then presents that achieving good performance in terms of system lifetime is the importance of the routing protocol design. Then we give the classification of the wireless sensor network and summarize the characteristic comparison of several kinds of existing protocols. Researching cluster-based routing protocol of wireless sensor network is the main part of this work. LEACH is selected to be the research target as the representative of the cluster-based routing protocols. The selection of cluster heads plays the leading role in wireless sensor network routing protocols. The former LEACH algorithms aim for adapting to clusters and rotating cluster heads. The selection of clusters depends on probability events. In every round, the cluster heads are determined randomly and the number of clusters can be different. LEACH protocol cannot promise to construct the clusters in reason. We bring forward some improvements to LEACH protocol. The improved LEACH periodically selects cluster heads according to their number, position and residual energy. The improved algorithms restrictions on the number and distance of cluster heads and chose cluster heads based on their residual energy. Through simulation results, it is proved that the improved algorithms can achieve good performance in terms of system lifetime.
