The translation study in our country so far has been focused on the inside translation system, while the study regarding the outside system about translation is relatively scarce. And what's more, there is little study with a focus on the role of publisher among all the studies regarding translation history. From the perspective of cultural development of our country, translation and publishing, however, are never two completely separate parts, which are, just the opposite, closely associated and promoted reciprocally. Given that the study on the connection between translation and publishing is sparse, and the relationship between the two is so intimate, as a master thesis on translation study, this paper is an attempt to investigate the translation publishing activities behind the famous translations and translators, taking the publishing activities of the masterpiece of Yan Fu's translation by Commercial Press as a typical example, in order to underline the unique role of publishers in translation activities, to disclose the tight relation between translation and publishing, and to build a bridge over the gap between the study on translation history and that on publishing history. The creativeness and originality of this paper is the focus pointed out on translation's publishing and publisher, and the advisable suggestion to translation studies that take the role of translation publisher into the chronicling of translation history.This paper conducts detailed research by means of materials collection, logic analysis and case study with the composition of the following parts.Introduction explains the reasons of the writing of this paper, specifies some important concepts implied in the title, neaten up the related studies that have been conducted on translation, publishing and the Commercial Press, and finally points out the significance and creativeness of this paper.First Chapter briefs on the translation publishing situation of our country in the 19th century, which includes the ideological basis, technical backup, characteristics of geographical distributing of translation publishing activities, and the differentiated publishing activities of various publishers.Second Chapter makes a detailed description on the situation of the early Commercial Press including its financial and economic situation, technical equipment, and institutional makeup, the publishing concept and idea of its publisher, and the transform of its translation publishing theme.Third Chapter describes the scale publishing activities of the masterpieces of Yan Fu's translation, with a brief introduction of some major Yan Fu's works including their social responses and publishing conditions. In addition, this chapter is also an attempt to discuss the close cooperation between the prestigious translator Yan Fu and the renowned publisher Zhang Yuanji, which shall include the economic and spiritual support given by publisher to Yan Fu's translation, and is supposed to be the key element in the promotion and boost of translation.Finally, this paper draws a conclusion with an emphasis on the unique role of publisher amid the course of translation's development.
