In October 2004,Phoenix Satellite TV(HK) began to broadcast a history-themed documentary(TV programs) named Panoramic Eyeshot of Phoenix at 8:00pm,drew great attention from people of all sections of society.From then on,Phoenix TV released the following programs of the same theme one after another:Oral History, Beauty for the Century,Booming China,China Impressions,as well as history close-related ones,like Secret Documentary,Passion On China,etc.All these programs saw favorable social repercussions and a high audience rating, which were a striking contrast with the other TV stations from mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.Phoenix TV's success on this point,is quite eye-catching, and thus much attention is needed to pay to.With some knowledge of Communication,Sociology,and Film,this paper is going to give a comprehensive idea of how everything of the history-themed documentary(TV programs) of Phoenix was going,like its social context of its emerging,major factors for its success,and things alike.Here,with a combination of the Methodologies of Event Study and Qualitative Research,we will take Panoramic Eyeshot of Phoenix,Oral history and Secret Documentary as the main study cases.Hopefully,this paper will make some sense in how to improve the current depressed situation of the history-themed documentary(TV programs) to a better one, and provide some enlightening ideas on the development of it in Chinese-speaking world.
