The public could form the impression of a country through the media, at the same time country’s image can be constructed through the coverage of mass media. Therefore, the media’s coverage of one country will affect the national image, which directly influences the audience’s understanding of the country. Because of American mainstream media leading role in the world stage, its news is very important to construct China’s national image.The New York Times, a most influential and well-known newspaper in the world, is considerably important for China shaping its national image in the United States or other countries. So, it is very helpful for us to review the China’s national image around the world, and take specific measures to improve China’s image.National image, news selection and other related theory as the theoretical support, this paper focus on China-related reports in The New York Times to present China’s national image. I will research all news about China in the front page of New York Times from 2001 to 2013. How China’s image is constructed by the media coverage through the methodology of quantitative analysis and text analysis. Standing on the historical perspective, I will focus on analysis how the report to change in 13 years. And finally, this paper present some thoughts on how to developing the information channels to improve China image in the world.
