The industrial design development based on reverse engineering was studied in the paper. A combination pattern of forward and reverse engineering was proposed to apply during the manufacture of the production to optimize the design process and shorten the exploiture cycle of product. With the new development pattern, communication between designer and products, timely man-machine technology test and evaluation of design can also be realized.In this paper, the character and the existent problem of the traditional industrial design development were analyzed at first. Secondly, the process, system constitution and key technologies of reverse developing process were discussed. Simultaneously, the conclusion that it should be innovative design based on the prototype rather than simple imitation was drew by analyzing as well as comparing forward developing process with the reverse one. Then, the optimization effect of the reverse engineering on the production process of industrial design was researched, advancing that the product development based on the reverse developing pattern could optimize the design process, actualize the communication between designer and products and benefit man-machine technology test as well as evaluation of design. At last, the application of reverse engineering in the industrial design product development was expound by three practical examples. .
