As a burgeoning wireless broadband access technology, WiMAX's emergence has become the focus of relative domain. By right of dominances in the aspect of technology, WiMAX keeps a rapid development all along. Base station system of WiMAX which adopts distributed networking uses software in order to accomplish some special functions and excavate hardware's potential, which does not simply depend on hardware to finish the needed functions and advance performance any longer. Meanwhile, for the sake of cutting down the cost, we provide the same hardware with different software so that hardware can accomplish different functions. Therefore, putting forward a net element software management model, found on base station system of WiMAX, to realize download, update, query and maintenance towards net element's software.According to the distributed networking's structure, the foreground of net element software management designs a download system with master memory and layered transmission. Each master node stores the software itself and the software of its corresponding control board, and only receives and transmits the software of next layer. Through two layers of master node transmitting the software to their corresponding control boards, software download realizes itself and improves the download speed and parallel degree. Hierarchical directory structure is applied to store information in the software of net element equipment and every directory corresponding files. Instead of directly operating on software stored in net element equipment, it finishes the task of maintenance effectively through modifying the information files corresponding to software. Meanwhile, these information files offer a convenient and effective approach for net element software management query and whole-net information collection. The background of net element software management, which adopts TMN criterion, mainly has Work Station Function (WSF), Management Application Function (MAF) and Element Management Function (EMF). Work Station Function offers a friendly operation interface. Management Application Function answers for operation logic and database operation. Element Management Function is in charge of adjusting tasks and communicating with net element equipment. The communication between WSF, MAF and EMF uses the same F message, which including sync-F message and async-F message. Due to the difference in the language between foreground and background, the communication between net element management function and net element equipment needs to be converted through C2JAVA before sending.The above-mentioned software management system satisfies functional demands of distributed networking. Meanwhile, its performance demands can be satisfied with advancing the parallel degree and making operation flow. The software management system is an all-round and predominant system.
