In the recent years, the coal industry has acquired marvelous development. Howerver, miners'safety are often threated by disasters, like mine collapse, gas leakage and water seepage. It is much difficult to evacute the miners or to rescue the wounderd when the rescures have to face so complicate undergrand terrain. Succor will be successful if the rescures can be informed of the accuarate position of the miners who are in danger after the accident as soon as possible.The wireless senor network (WSN), is a new type of self-managed data collection network, that integrates the ability of wireless communication, data collection and information disposal. The production safety can be ensured and the daily management of miners and assets can be improved when WSN puts into applications of safety control and localization in the mine. ZigBee is is a typical WSN protocol that has a lot of unique identities such as low power consumption, reliable data communication, ad-hoc and low cost so that it adatpts so well to WSN application in coalmine with atrocious environment which requires low cost and low energy consumption and sustains.By comparing the positioning technologies and analyzing the characteristics and orientation requirements of coalmine, the localization method based on received signal strength indicator is chosed for the system. Focus on the characteristics of coalmine or indoor situation, an indoor localization algorithm based on WSN is brought up to fulfill the requirement of accuracy. It is well supported with experiments that the algorithm boasted itself with high accuracy and low hardware requirement. To realize the practical utilization in the environments with multi-disturbance and rapid attenuation for electromagnetic wave, another rapid positoning algorithm is developed to achieve the goal of tracing the moving target. According to experiment results, this method will trace the mobile object effectively even under the environment with poor connection, which is proved to be useful.A management system based on localization for coal miners is presented in the latter part. The proposal adapts the ZigBee WSN and supply with the method to install the nodes. It also proposes to integrate LAN online network and wireless self-organized network to extend its stability. The entire location management system consists of three major parts, location, data transmission, and control software. The work flows of ZigBee nodes are introduced, covering the area of positioning strategy, orientation process, envirnement information collection, wirless data exchange and uart communication. Coming to the part of control software, it recomends some pratical functions, like positioning in mine, personnel attendance check, worker call, emergency alarm and safety monitor. The system can not only provides accurate location information when the disaster blasts, but also come to help for daily management. It really satifies the needs of coalmine industry.
