The space optical communication is wireless communications, the establishment of the whole communication links depends entirely on the ATP system. In order to ensure the reliable of communication, the requirements of track precision and real-time of the ATP system are very high. At present, the most photoelectric sensors used in APT system are CCD image sensors. Comparing with CMOS image sensor, the CCD device has a great advantage of high integration and low power consumption. The current CMOS image sensor technology is developing towards to high sensitivity, high resolution and high dynamic range. The CMOS image sensors with so many advantages must be instead of CCD in the future. As a result, CMOS image sensors used as a detector to track the APT system have a great significance which will improve the targeting accuracy, real-time, system integration and cost-effective and so on. This article researches on CMOS image sensor IBIS5. Using a self-made camera based on IBIS5 to verify the feasibility of CMOS image sensor used as APT laser communications system with automatic probe and aiming. All the feasibility is verified by the experiments of the infrared sensitivity, dark current testing and sub-pixel interpolation precision.
