Underground engineering is the exploitation and utilization of underground space, and its process involves a large number of engineering and geological data management and query. Traditional methods of descriptive and directive nature are poor of data analysis; besides, interpretation is generally limited to two-dimensional, static expression. At present, with the development of computer graphics and visualization in scientific computing technologies, it is feasible to establish three-dimensional geological. Compared to traditional information display, three-dimensional model is more intuitive, flexible, receptive, and easier to observe from different perspectives. And we can get more information which is difficult on the two-dimensional graphics.Summarized the current GIS software in three-dimensional platforms and the shortcomings of strong less realistic, poor three-dimensional visualization and lack of GIS functions, we provide a new method to build three-dimensional GIS system, that is, using three-dimensional construction modeling software to create three-dimensional model and then converting it to the data format that GIS can identify, then on this basis, calling GIS function to develop three-dimensional GIS system module. The steps in details are as follows: first, build three-dimensional stratigraphic model with GOCAD and underground engineering models, such as segment, tunnels, and other engineering components model with AutoCAD and 3ds MAX , the form of files generation is based on whether the model query is processing in the whole model or not. Finally, we call ArcObjects development kit on ArcEngine platform to develop three-dimensional GIS system. The main tasks in this paper : introduce the project overview, analyse the overall needs of the system and researching significance, summarize the status of related research, and introduce system-related knowledge, development methods, and the realization of the main functions and the system database designation; next, it discusses how to choose the proper construction methods against different objects on the basis of classifying and analyzing methods of studying three-dimensional formation spatial data model, designs and implemented enquiry module for three-dimensional formation combined with its demand, next, from analyzing three-dimensional model of different formats, it establishes the methods of 3D component model construction and the generation of engineering documents, designs main functions of query module for 3D components combined with its demand, and demonstrated the effect of creating documents; it introduces and shows the main interface and function of the experimental system and the main functions; Finally, it summarizes the main conclusions and innovative points, and pointed out the direction for further research. The results achieved in this paper is that aiming at the underground construction and three-dimensional characteristics of geographic information systems, and we summarize of the data needs and modeling methods of underground works around the needs of information technology construction and finally we develop Nanjing Yangtze River Tunnel three-dimensional information enquiry system. The innovations of this paper are designing transformed view enquiry system which can display two-dimensional graphic and three-dimensional graphic, breaking out the limitation of single perspective, binding the advantages of them; adopting a method combined with there-dimensional modeling software and GIS to develop three-dimensional GIS system, solving the problem of just displaying three-dimensional model without enquiry, implementations the enquiry and edit of data.
