Entering the 21st century, broadband access technologies and the development of new telecommunication services presents tremendous challenges to Metro Ethernet, which is original for narrow-band data services market. Although the core layer in Metro Ethernet has already found an ideal solution, but access layer convergence still lacks a comprehensive solution. Though the industry has developed MPLS, RPR, Q-in-Q and other solutions, they are lack of effective protection measures or need to manage a very complex system, which is unable to fully meet large-scale multi-service carrier-grade network operating requirements.VPLS is a new Ethernet technology, which combines the advantages of Ethernet and MPLS, can provide a new, flat, low-cost integration framework for future Metro Ethernet. This thesis presents a technology solution based on VLPS for Shanghai Telecom Metro Ethernet convergence layer that is in use now, and tried to work out a workable design pattern for future Metro Ethernet network as well.The thesis is targeting carrier-grade Ethernet technology VPLS and analyzed various aspects of VPLS technology, including technical evolution, principles and characteristics. It also discussed the situation of a recently built metro network which used VPLS to set up a new generation of Metro Ethernet in Shanghai Telecom, including the network's purpose and significance, needs analysis, network design, and discussed the inadequacies of the VPLS technology and the future development trend.Through six months of design and construction, the network has formally come into commercial use, a total of 4 VPLS Rings and 20 edge nodes, carrying mainly NGN, VPN and IPTV services. The network is one of the world's first Metro Ethernet Ring and its business scale and diversity are very representative for commercial trail networks. Judging from the current operation, the network has met the expected requirements, compared to the earlier metro network based entirely on the three-tier switch as a convergence layer, the new one provides 50 ms redundancy protection and point-to-point VPN services, saves more fibers and requires less bandwidth at the same time. The VPLS technology-based Metro Ethernet Ring has already been proved to be workable in carrier work practices, which has important reference value to future deployment of similar networks.
