As a newly arisen VPN service,VPLS(virtual private LAN service) lets enterprises cross WAN to acquire various kind of services. With the development of information technology, this kind of demand is becoming more and more obvious. Each big network equipment manufacturer produces high level switch and router to support VPLS one after another. Among these equipments, network processor, with its excellent high speed processing ability and flexible programming ability, has become an effective solution in solving data processing.This article, basing on 69 series high level switch of ZTE Corporation, researches on the realization of VPLS that relates to the technique on the EZCHIP NP-1C network processor. It analyzes the characteristics of VPLS technology on switch and the advantages of network processor comparing with ASIC chip and decides to carry out VPLS service of switch on the network processor. According to the existing system structure of switch, this article makes clear that with the way of hybridizing processing of EZCHIP NP-1C network processor and the BROADCOM ASIC chip sets, it realizes the method of percolation, processing, redirection of VPLS packets and normal packets.This article explains the related theories of the VPN technology, MPLS, MPLS layer 3 VPN and MPLS layer 2 VPN and advances from simple to difficult gradually. With the foundation of analyzing VPLS principle and VPLS relative key technology deeply, it then studies the system structure of switch and MAC address management mold and NP-1C network processor mold related to VPLS realization and establishes the theories basis and development environment of this design. Finally, from the aspects of VPLS protocol control block design, VPLS packets switch and stream control, it explores the realization of VPLS design.
