With the 3d laser scanning technology, the geometric feature information of the objects can be obtained quickly and accurately from real-world into virtual models. This technology has been widely used in industry, national defense, mapping, preservation, virtual reality and many other areas. Appending a kinetic orthogonal axis to the scanning direction of the 2d laser scanner can attain a new 3d laser scanner with a low price. The 3d rotary laser scanning system is commonly composed by a 2d laser scanner and a rotating platform with angle sensor. In this system, the 2d laser scanner obtains the distance and the vertical angle information while the angle sensor gains the plane angle information in real time. Then with the time matching, the scanning points can be transferred into the 3d reference frame as the point cloud.This paper presents a 3d laser scanning system with a AC servo motor, SCM and dual-counter which is used to 360 degree rotating scan to obtain 3d space scene. This scanning system has achieved the functions such as custom angle, speed, direction and frequency with a high accuracy in single point resolving power and angle measurement. Moreover, as the component-style, it would attain a higher accuracy and more functions if the scanner changed to an accurate one. In this design, the platform which loads the scanning sensor can load heavier one and change the frequency to matching the scanning sensor. In order to scanning the details, the scanning frequency, start angle, end angle and the rotating speed can changed as a well manipulation. The point cloud can be displayed on the LCD of PC for the correction. Several approaches have been used in the system in order to decline the error which acquires a high accuracy. Based on the 2d laser scanner, this paper designs and implements the 3d scanning system. Particularly, in this paper, the ways on error decline and accuracy improvement have been emphasized. With many test experimentations, this system has revealed the advantage as accuracy and celerity for the angle resolution has reached to 2 sec as well as the single point measurement is centimeter level. As a result, it can be used for the space scene modeling.
