With the development of laser ranging technique and image processing technique, reverse engineering has become one of the hot research topics in the world. Nowadays, the creativity and development speed is important for enterprise competitiveness, reverse engineering technology can make full use of product information to build information platform of 3D digital model for domestic enterprises, then enterprises can develop new products based on the information of 3D model, which will shorten product development cycle and create huge economic and social benefits.This paper studies the technique of transforming surface model into 3D digital model. Firstly, data acquisition system is studied here.laser scanning equipment is developed independently, including selection of core components, camera calibration and a new method of laser center extraction based on direction template and iterative method. Secondly, according to the research status of data preprocessing, the algorithms of data registration, noise elimination, hole repairing and data simplification are studied and improved. Thirdly, human-computer interface of data processing software is developed based on VS2010 and OpenGL. Data preprocessing, view transformation, data storage and other algorithms are integrated into specific interface icons. Lastly, the paper promotes that the self-designed reverse software is applied to process point cloud data and the software CATIA is used to reconstruct surface, which will make full use of the advantage of reverse software and CATIA. the method takes an automobile interior as the study object and completes its reconstruction.The results show that point cloud data of objects can be successfully obtained by laser scanning equipment. Data will become smoother and the feature will be enhanced after data preprocessing. The method of transforming surface model into 3D digital model can effectively improve the reconstruction speed and quality of the surface, and also can meet industry precision and smoothing requirements.The paper introduces the process of reconstructing surface based on the self-designed scanning system, reverse software and CATIA, which is meaningful for industrial product innovation design.
