For 3D surface scanning and 3D model reconstruction in reverse engineering, over the past decade, some 3D scanning machines, which are based on Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) configuration, appeared at measurement and inspection equipment markets in succession. The scanning blind region and low scanning rate have been being common problems in current scanning equipment due to their unreasonable structure. To overcome the above problems, a novel 3D scanner is developed in this thesis.An original design program of three-dimensional laser scanning system is introduced in terms of mechanical structure, control system and operating system structure. The presented system combines optical, mechanical and electrical technologies together, it includes advanced data processing technology, laser scanning technology, advanced control technology and robot technology and so on, so that 3D surface inspection and surface digital reconstruction are implemented automatically. The system consists of an electric-drive laser detector, a C-arm, lifter turntables, electronic control system and a master computer. The object with freeform surface can be scanned without any blind points. Furthermore, the adaptive path planning is available for the measurement process. The effectiveness of the proposed measurement machine is demonstrated from some shown testing results.Using the technologies about non-contact laser measurement control and surface reconstruction, the novel 3D scanning system is developed. In the system, a C-Arm is used to support the glide orbit with laser scanning head, also, a positioner with high repeat moving precision is designed so that fast 3D measurement and inspection for the freeform complex surface is implemented. The novel scanning system with integrated and intelligent data processing software package results in the obvious improvement of the efficiency for 3D scanning, data processing and 3D reconstruction etc.. In addition, the system calibration is so successful that the accuracy of motion control of the laser head is less than 0.0045 mm; the rotating accuracy of motion control of positioner is over 0.016°; the landing accuracy of motion control of positioner is 0.02 mm; absolute accuracy of the scanning system is 0.2 mm.
