Using image processing technology, serial communication technology, VC++ program design technology and stepping motor controlled by MCU, this paper designs and achieves a billiards detection system. The billiards move to the billiards dividing mechanism controlled by the stepper motor, the billiards dividing mechanism conveys the billiards one by one to the detecting area, the billiards information is sent to PC through an ordinary and lower-cost CCD camera. After the billiards type has been determined by using the image processing technology, the upper computer calls the billiards rules program that storing in the MCU to calculate the movement of the dribbling sleeve and control the stepper motor.The system uses the image grabbing system to acquire the billiards information, uses the result of image processing results as billiards differentiating feedback signal. And benefited from this feature, the cost of the system is greatly decreased.Through large quantity of experiments considering the case of the billiards through the differentiating and determine of the grabbed billiards image, we obtain effective and high speed algorithm which successfully differentiates the billiards with satisfying effect, and the algorithm is especially suitable to this system. Considering the function, designing feature etc, the hardware is detailed designed, the mechanical structure of the billiards dividing part and the image grabbing part are designed too.The system is designed using VC++, the software which integrated softwear development environment in host computer, calling MATLAB to do the image-processing, containing serial communication module and controlling module of slave computer MCU.Using of image-processing technology in the detection and recognition of billiards object adapts to the demand of modern industry, and it has favorable foreground in application and development. So this topic has important research significance.
