The study of the China-related reports in the western mainstream media is one of the hotspots in the academic research in recent years, especially in the year of 2008,when China had held the 29th Olympic Games in August, suffered earthquake in May,as well as 30th anniversary of the reform and opening up……It is of great significance to understand the views of the mainstream media and society towards China in western countries,to improve the international communication system of China, and finally to build up the fine national image of China. The first part is the introduction, combining the main thesis of the research background, the relevant theoretical research and research methods.Based on the classification of the existing related research and the first-hand material, combining quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis, the article explore the China-related reports in New York Times of U.S.A and The Guardian of U.K in the year of 2008,and analyzes the subjects, mechanism and restricting factors. And finally, the article puts forward some thoughts and revelations on the objective understanding of China-related reports in western media. The main section is divided into three parts:The second part is China-related reports of the western mainstream media analysis, focusing on all articles about "China" in New York Times of U.S.A and The Guardian of U.K in 2008.This section, the author uses textual analysis, towards to all articles printed every Thursday in these two media from the subjects, sources, words, attitudes and the China's image of the articles.Secondly, the author selects three specific cases happened in the same year, with the methods of content analysis.According to research, the author finds the two media are quite conformity in the attitude and the position when they report the Tibet, human rights, emergency, political issues,as well as the Olympic stories. And Economic reports are also the most frequently reports, envolved the international financial crisis,China's economy policies, quality of product and trade reports. These media could be more objective in such subjects. In third part, the author analysis the characteristic of these reports in two media. Western media usually has strong "selective",they like to report details they need, instead of telling the whole story to readers, and they always choose impactive, sanguinary subjects. They focus on China's human rights, religious issues,Tibet issues and Taiwan issues. In these reports, they are almost negative reports.Western media often describe China as the negative image, there are reasons: ideology, national interest, business, and cultural obstacles. We can not passively wait for change of western media,if we hope the western media could change the existing impression of China. On the contrary,we need to improve the work of our external reports to western media due to promoting the improvement of Chinese image. Therefore, the fourth part analysis problems on our external reports, based on the main two parts above. Then, suggestions are given according to the formal:complete the spokesman system, strength the services to the western reporters working in China, transmit on effective information, make communication targets more wider, use people-oriented perspective, concerning about the foreign politician, personage and journalists when they visit China, use websites and forum to build bridge between Chinese government and netizens, finally,we need to build a perfect strategy when we reports emergency issues. The final section is conclusion:China-related reports are increased because China is more important in international politic and economic status. With my research, western media is love-hate attitude to China, they criticize the political issues such as human rights, democracy, while they praise the economic policy and development of culture. When the author uses the specific samples-issues happened in Lhasa March 14th,Wenchuan earthquake May 12th and the Olympic Games August 8th,as an ex the case of the analysis, the authors found that the Western media's "love-hate" complex attitude is even obvious.
