With the fast increasing of the power and the growing of influence of Chinese military,"Chinese military threat theory"prevailed in the western media as a part of"Chinese threat theory"in military area. So a lot of scholars takes interest in the researching of the China-related military reports.Scholars both domestic and abroad take too much energy in researching China-related reports of western media. But to the China-related military reports, researchers research the topic as a part of China-related reports, not a specialized and independent part, or research the topic in the view of other subjects, not journalism. So, the thesis plans to research how western media mold the images of Chinese military in China-related military reports. As the most influential media in the western society, The New York Time leads the public opinions of the western society. In the light of the authority and representativity of the paper, we choose the China-related military reports in this paper to research how the western media mold the images of the Chinese military. Combined with qualitative and quantitative analysis, the thesis takes the 120 reports in the newspaper from 2005 to 2009 as the samples of the researching. By researching the contents of the following four topics in the reports:"the dialogues and communication between Sino-US militaries","the worry of the so-called Chinese military threat","the relation between the increasing of Chinese military power and the straits ties"and"so-called transparency of Chinese military expenditure budget", we want to know how this newspaper mold the images of Chinese military and how the images of Chinese military is molded by the paper.A striking feature of the thesis is applying the"cultural hegemony theory"to research why the newspaper mold the images of the Chinese military like this or that in the China-related military reports. We finally concluded that with the influence and filtering of western cultural hegemony, the images of Chinese military molded by the paper are not the true images of this military, but the images which is rebuilt and remolded by the paper in the light the western values and the interests of the U.S., also the images of"others"which is molded out of the"circle"of the western cultural center.
