In recent years,with the reform of management system of higher education, Chinese universities have combined in succession.It is very ordinary pattern that one university has several districts which bring difficulties in planning and managing of campus,There is an urgent need for realizing digitization of the means of planning and management.Virtual Campus System is a specific application of Geographic Information System(GIS) and virtual reality technology in the digital campus.Virtual campus improves the level of modernization of the campus and is able to support decision-making of campus management.Virtual Campus is the core platform of the digital campus system with which specific applications can be linked.At the same time, virtual campus system also has the external publicity function and has built a good platform for the general user.Users can understand the campus comprehensively and intuitively and query the attributes of variety landscapes and architectures in campus using the virtual campus system.Using the campus of the Henan University as the research object,the paper studies and researches in-depth the basic theory and techniques of construction of virtual campus based on Skyline Terrasuite which is management software of 3D spatial information.It is a new method of building a virtual campus GIS which shown by experiments.The main research contents of this article are as follows:1.Building of three-dimensional surface model of campusThree-dimensional surface model of campus is a simulation of the real three-dimensional surface in campus and reflects the actual situation of the surface relief in campus which is also known as three-dimensional surface topography data sets or database.In this paper,the three-dimensional surface model of the campus is built by using campus's DOM and DEM.2.Building of virtual campus landscape model The paper describs the geographical elements system of virtual campus and determines the spatial granularity for 3D description of virtual campus.According to the properties of different campus landscape features,the landscape features are divided into three classes which include point,line and polygon.And then,based on the correlation theories and method of three dimensional modeling,the virtual campus landscape model library has built by using MultiGen Creator which is a three dimensional modeling software,three-dimensional modeling module of Skyline and ground-based LiDAR system.3.Integrating and releasing of virtual campus systemIn this paper,firstly,the 3D virtual scenes of virtual campus are built by integrating the three-dimensional surface model and landscape model.And then the object property database is established by using database technology.The navigation map and the system information windows of Virtual Campus Integration System are generated.Finally,functions and interface of the system are developed by using COM technology.The virtual campus system is integrated with the Henan University Digital Campus platform and publishes the 3D virtual campus landscape via web.In this paper,the Skyline-based virtual campus system which constructed through the web servers and virtual campus data servers publishes the virtual campus via web and connects with the digital campus platform seamlessly.It is a useful supplementary of the digital campus functions.The spatial database and attribute database of ancient architectures are built by collecting and modeling the campus ancient architectures using the ground-based LiDAR system that realizing the digitization and protection of the campus ancient architectures.Those can provide many important references to rebuild and restore ancient architectures by model displaying and database managing with virtual campus system.
