The research on WSN (Wireless Sensor Networks) began from 20th century 90's. Until now, it has been developed from the initial node design to network protocol design and intelligent instruments group research. WSN has become a completely new hot IT (Information Technology) technology.Instrument network means the network made by instruments. It can make the management and operation to the instruments much easier and also can control the instruments by network from a far distance.Nowadays, basing on the intelligence of instrument, the rapid development of Internet technology made the instrument network come true. Instrument network is also the developing trend of the instrument; it can also be used in the measurement technology. All of this indicates that the research on instrument network is necessary. This subject will do some scientific research on the PC (Personal Computer) Base Station in the WSN instrument network. The combination of the wireless sensor networks and the instruments is the most innovation point of this subject.This subject relied on the"Instrument Network Basing on Wireless Sensor Network"project which is launched by Jilin Province Science and Technology Agency. The keystone of this project is the research about the PC-base station in the instrument network which basing on wireless sensor network. Base station works as a transfer node for the whole network's communication. At the same time, the PC-base station can also provide a powerful operation functions, this is distinct from the common base stations. As this research is aimed at Detection Vehicles of Jida·Little Swan Instrument Co., Ltd. And in this research instruments means portable instruments, so using the wireless sensor network have large advantages.Generally, PC-base stations can be divided into three parts: i. Front-End sensor node. ii. Interface of the management system for PC-base station. iii. Communication between PC-base station and management center. Below parts will introduce the design and implementation for each part separately.i. The Front-End node is the wireless sensor network node, communicating with the PC-base station by the RS232 serial port. The hardware of this node includes MSP430F149 processor and the CC2420 RF chip, The IAR Embedded Workbench Embedded Workbench (3.10 version) provided MSP430's debugging and developing environments. On one hand the Front-End node collect data from each instrument node and send to PC, on the other hand PC send orders to each instrument node. Front-End node's main function is to communicate with the other instrument nodes. The communication protocol between nodes follows the WSN communication protocol and complete the data transmission following set routing, but the research about routing protocol is not include in this subject.ii. Interfaces of PC-base station management system. Development platform is Visual Basic 6.0. For the database system, Microsoft Access 2003 was chose on consideration of easy operating, easy learning, low system resources occupying etc. Design of user interface for PC-base station management system increased the operability of data and instrument management and also made the PC-base station has more powerful functions, increased the flexibility of the system base stations. Considering the practical application, the convenience of users and the data security, we made the design of the interface as follows. (1) The user login interface. The user login interface was set up to ensure data security. As only legitimate users are allowed to log into the PC-base station management system, so a management system is needed to set up different user-level with different user permissions. (2) Main interface for PC-base station management system. This interface is indispensably for the whole system, all the operation object can be find in the menu or shortcut menu.(3) Interface for instrument operation. Through this interface all status (on / off, work) of instruments will be displayed to make the management and operation much more convenient, we can operate the instrument which status displayed as"open"directly.(4) Data manipulation. Data manipulation, including data query interface, personnel information registration interface and information query interface. Data query interface is designed for users to query apparatus's measurement data; personnel information registration interface used for recording measurement information and save them to database, the information can also be queried through information query interface. (5) System settings. System settings include communication settings and upload mode settings. In fact, communication settings are mainly to set the communication ports which connect to the front-end, PC and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). Upload settings are to set the parameters when GSM is in upload mode, correct setting is to protect the normal communication of the PC base station. (6) User Management. In"The user login interface", we mentioned the necessary for user management, administrators can add, delete, modify user's information through the user interface, the general users of this system can also see the other user's information, but they only have "read only" permissions.iii. Communications between local PC and remote management center using GSM. PC-base station connected to a GSM module through serial port, GSM module communicates with management center by SMS (Short Message System). Restricted by experiments conditions, we use mobile phones instead of Management Center for testing, SMS have three modes: BLOCK Mode, PDU Mode and TEXT Mode. In this research we choose PDU mode to communicate with management center and send characters, mixed with numbers and letters.This research completed the task to achieve the basic functions of a base station. As using the PC platform, this base station is more powerful in data storage processing than normal, at the same time the PC-base station management interface increased the operability and flexibility of base station.Although PC-base station has been basically completed and the basic functions has been achieved, but there were many imperfections, such as the design for some features are not complete, and user interface design is not beautiful and convenient enough, although the basic communications has achieved, but still, there is a big difference to use management center from the cell phone terminal in GSM communications. Therefore, we need some follow-up work to improve the PC-base station's function further.
