In order to create our own Dental CAD System, the key technique of Dental CAD is studied on the basis of our finished works using HOOPS graphic platform. The following are the contents:The Margin line is the reference of Dental CAD, but there are only two existent methods. The first one is a fully handwork which always costs much time. The second one is fully automatic, it is not satisfied either. In this paper, a interactive margin-detect algorithm is studied based on the principle of Intelligent Scissor, it can detect the margin line quickly and freely according to the curvature of the mesh.The restoration of the tooth is actually the restoration of its anatomic feature which defines the form of the tooth. In this paper, the feature of the standard tooth is detected using the Snake model, and then used for the extraction of that on the preparation as a mask. After that the data file of the standard tooth is created using the extracted feature. All of these are the reference of Dental CAD.Surface design is the key of the Dental CAD.Although NUBRS can do this; the number of its control point is too large to be adjusted. In order to improve the situation, an algorithm that can deform the total and local mesh by Radial Basis Function is studied. This method is good for that it can morph the mesh by only a few feature points.In order to bulid a Dental CAD System, the function diagram is studied by analyzing the process of Dental Design. After that, a Dental CAD System is built on the HOOPS Graphic Platform, and two restorations, Crown and Inlay, are created.The algorithm of margin line and feature detection and the technique of tooth surface design mentioned in this paper are the key techniques of the Dental CAD System, they will lay a basis for the future work.
