The computer application of oral cavity repair is one of primary research directions of computer applications in the area of dentistry. It could be traced back to early seventies. In recent years, with the development of electronics, automatic control, computer graphics and image processing, emulation of the activities of dentists by computers has being developed rapidly and becomes the primary development direction of the oral cavity repair in the future.Reconstruction of 3D dental prosthesis by computers may transform the abstract digital information into visible graphics so that the dentists can clearly observe the shape of the tooth, pre-arrange the tooth, display and adjust the tooth interactively and so on. The result of the reconstruction is very important for it effects the usability of a system directly. The main research work in the thesis is for finally meeting the requirement put forward in the project entitled as The Data Processing of 3D dental Prosthesis, a cooperative project from the Research Center of Engineering&Technology for Dental Computing of Ministry of Health P.R.China. The work is also supported by the President Foundation of ICT Project entitled The Research on Segmentation and Rendering of 3D Medical Images. In the thesis, the concept, development and the principal algorithms in visualization are introduced and the methods of contour connection of 3D-object reconstruction are discussed. The methods of smoothing in Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) are also introduced. According to the characteristics of the dental prosthesis data, two different processing approaches of 3D dental prosthesis reconstruction are presented. In the first approach, a distance-weighed interpolation is conducted first to the dental prosthesis data. Then an operation of contour connection, based on the shortest diagonal method is carried out. Finally, surface shading is performed for rendering the surfaces. And an improved Laplacian smoothing algorithm is applied to the triangle mesh of the dental prosthesis to reduce the noise. The experimental result shows that the quality of dental surfaces generated is satisfactory. In another processing approach, based on an energy-criterion method to eliminate the undulations caused by measurement errors of the data on 2D contours, the...
