Nowadays, there came out a newest pipe forming technology FFX(Flexible Forming Exact)in pipe mill industry. It could produce pipes (Round or Square )into diameter size which the customer ordered in one mill line. This technology improved the usual mill lines'shortage of producing only one fixed diameter pipes. In entry section of the mill line, coils would be opened and leveled, then fed to the forward sections continuously. There was a technical requirement in entry section: The coil must sustain proper tension when it was openning, because operations in the forward mill sections were based on the continuous and stable feeding. The tension could neither be lacking nor exceeding. The topic of tension control was argued with specialy in this paper. Tension control which was widely used in modern factory was proved to be very important in rising product's quality, so the topic was widely-worthwhile researching.In this paper, the flow of Entry section was analyzed,and how the tension came out was figured out, then the mathematical model of the system was built, meanwhile a manner calculating the varying diameter was put forward. To meet the controlling demand, the former system used closed-loop PID control. But there was some shortcoming in PID control. e. g. Complex parameter configuration, Non-robust system property, Big overshooting, Long adjusting time, etc. To improve this, fuzzy control was put forward. After simulated in Matlab7.0, the system revealed good control effect. Based on fuzzy control, a tension control system with siemens S7-300 PLC.Micromaster440.and MP277 HMI supervising interface was constructed. After tested in lab, the result revealed fuzzy control could satisfy the tension control system's need of speediness, stabilization and veracity.At last, a conclusion from the experience was drawn, and the working course was raised.
