Along with the rapid development of embedded system, Linux is becoming a popular embedded operation system based on its advantages, such as an open source operation system, high stability and security, sustaining most hardware platform, strong network function, good flexibility and modification, and low cost of development. It provides a favorable solution for embedded system. But Linux isn't designed for embedded development. Using Linux as an understructure operation system, to customize and Tailor, then form an embedded operation system which can satisfy idiographic application requirement would be involved in many problems. This paper mainly researches and discusses the solutions aiming at those several key problems.This paper firstly introduces the characteristics, advantages and structures of embedded Linux. Then based on analyzing the limits of Linux used on embedded system, the main problems including kernel size, real-time characteristic, file system, boot optimize have been brought forward. By adopting kernel module re-compound, source code tailoring, combining file-system, simplifying script and etc, the relevant solutions are proposed. Meanwhile, an embedded Linux system was implemented on X-Hyper255B platform based on Intel Xscale PXA255 processor. Finally, several capacity tests and performance evaluating for our embedded Linux operation system were carried out.The research of this thesis can be used to the development of embedded applications, which can provide service and support of operation system's level for embedded system application research.
