Research On Creative Pattern Of Socialized Information Service Of Academic Libraries

The socialization of information service of academic libraries means that the academic libraries break through the traditional scope of their information users which was restricted to teachers, students and researchers on campus, and to serve the public. In recent years, there has been rising voice calling for the socialization of information service of academic libraries because of the information resources shortage of the public libraries. Additionally, the socialization of information service may create significant economic benefits which enable the libraries to raise their service level. As a result, a lot of academic libraries in China have started this new approach, and probe on patterns of socialized information service of academic libraries became a research focus in the field of library and information science.The pattern of socialized information service of academic libraries, which means that academic libraries should focus on the needs for information of the public in specific region with the social development, comprises the five interrelated parts including information users, information service providers, information service contents as well as information service strategy and guarantee system. Actually, theoretical researches on one or some of them have been conducted by former researchers who also propose measures for the existing status of certain academic libraries. However, this thesis would take an attempt to give a comprehensive and systematic research on pattern of socialized information service of academic libraries and bring up a generally suitable and adoptable pattern of socialized information service for academic libraries in China.In this thesis, firstly the creative theoretical foundation is elaborated on the pattern of socialized information service of academic libraries. Secondly, there is a concrete analysis of the current situation of academic libraries on socialized information service based on information socialization level, information service contents, information users and comparison on information socialization level of the academic libraries in different regions. Thirdly, a summary is obtained of the two existing patterns of socialized information service adopted by most academic libraries in China, one pattern on the basis of traditional information service and the other on the basis of information users. The thesis hereby points out the insufficiencies of the two patterns currently adopted on the aspect of lacking in persistent developing capability and overly relying on imported database. Aiming at those insufficiencies, a creative and exploratory pattern of socialized information service is proposed based on regional development plan, and concrete analysis of suggestions to Library of Chongqing University is presented to elaborate how to build the pattern. Finally, this thesis summarizes the commonly existing problems nowadays in academic libraries in China and also makes a brief study on approaches against the problems.
