Gantry crane is the indispensable one of the large-scale equipments in hydropower station, The gantry cranes which are used in hydropower to open and close sluice gates are named gantry hoists. Gantry hoists are typical non-standard equipments, so each of the new gantry hoists has to be designed. Moreover, with the increase in weight and lifting height of the gantry hoists, the high-level dynamic features of them are required more than ever before. As a result, more advanced design methods are acquired. In this paper ,take the project of gantry hoist which is designed for BaiLongtan Hydropower Station in Guangxi Province as an example, three typical working processes of gantry hoist are simulated with Virtual Prototyping Technology, trying to find a way to introduce the dynamic design concept into large- scale cranes' designing works.The method of creating Dynamic Virtual Prototyping is researched as a main part in this paper. Different methods are provided for rigid parts, flexible parts and wireropes. As for the virtual prototyping of gantry hoist, portal gantry structure is imported to ADAMS as flexible parts from ANSYS; trolley, cart system, sluice gate and spreader are imported to ADAMS as rigid parts from Pro/E, and wireropes are modeled by cylinder segments linked by Spring. Then, all parts are assembled in ADAMS. Finally, Dynamic Virtual Prototyping of gantry hoist is completed.According to the dynamic characteristics in the typical working processes of gantry hoists, the dynamic loads' calculation results are derived by Lagrange Equation.Hoisting, mainframe traveling, trolley traveling operation are typical working processes of gantry hoists, and dynamic simulations of them are made in ADAMS. Dynamic displacements, dynamic stresses, dynamic deformations and joint forces etc. are obtained.In a word, Dynamic Virtual Prototyping study of integrate system of gantry hoists is a trial that applies advanced designs, analysis, simulation techniques in the design of gantry hoists .And it offers efficient tool and method to design high-performance hoists. At the same time, this method can instead the tests which gantry hoists are difficult to be tested due to weights problems.
