By delivering a series of lectures about A Story of the Stone in Lecture Room, Liu Xinwu achieves a great success and draws the attention and critiques of some other scholars. Considering that the lecture of Liu Xinwu is one of television products, which produces effects by means of electronic media, this thesis attempts to transcend the standpoint of academic study, takes it as a phenomenon of contemporary popular culture, and then analyzes the reasons of the success of Liu Xinwu from literature, sociology and anthropology etc. By this case study, this topic is supposed to discuss the characteristics of popular culture, even of contemporary culture.Firstly, by reading the text of Liu Xinwu's lecture, analyzing the characters, events, viewpoints, and ways of expression in the text, this thesis is to explore and discuss the sensory stimuli and the phatic entertainment of Liu Xinwu's program, which should accord with that of "People Culture". Then, the crux of Liu Xinwu's lecture becoming popular culture will be concluded.Secondly, it is to probe deeper the subsequent effect of Liu Xinwu's lecture, the success and failure of it, dig out the characteristics of popular culture in the structure of contemporary culture, and present objective critiques.
