Research On The Application Of Topic Maps In The Construction Of Library's Characteristic Database

The construction of characteristic database is an important part in building the library's digital resources. Although the domestic construction of characteristic database has made some progress in the complement of some characteristic databases and the proposal of meaningful theories and methods, the research on the technology used in the construction of characteristic database is only in a small scale. Therefore, studying and introducing the latest foreign technologies is quite significant to construct domestic characteristic database.Topic Map is a new technology in organizing digital knowledge, which can build a semantic web in upper information resources and be independent from technology platform. Topic Map can not only locate the knowledge resources but also present the associations of them. It is equipped with the functions of locating and linking the knowledge resources.Setting the multimedia database of special economic animals and plants as the research example, the thesis adopts the topic map to construct the characteristic database based on relevant researches through the methods of documentation reviewing, network surveying, expert consulting and analysis comparing.The paper firstly expounds the research background, purpose, significance, status and content, and then presents the detailed analysis to the topic map and the characteristic database. Concerning topic map, the author discusses its core concepts, technology tools, the bibliometric analysis and the applications. As far as the characteristic database is concerned, the author not only introduces its definition, characteristics and the types but also analyses its building process and the relevant technical support, and summarizes the research status at last.Based on the studies in the topic map and the characteristic database, the author firstly designs the overall structure of topic map's navigate system for the multimedia database of special economic animals and plants, and then completes the construction of economic animals and plants' topic maps, realizing its visualization. Secondly, comparing the experimental system with the original multimedia database, the author sums up the results of the research, that is, successful construction of the topic map for the special economic animals and plants, further confirmation of topic map's application in characteristic database. Finally, the author proposes the suggestions for both the topic map and the characteristic database in their further development.
