Although motion capture technology can produce highly realistic and real-time animation, it has limitations: the captured data is simple and noisy, large volume of data is hard to control and can only be applied in specific circumstances, type of data is single. Editing is required for captured data to apply to new environment.Based on motion data from BVH files, motion retargeting and motion transition between characters topologically the same or different was researched.Firstly, motion retargeting was researched, intermediate skeleton is required for retargeting between topologically different characters. Different from Monzani's method, intermediate skeleton rather than end skeleton was used for motion after retargeting, process was simplified by that way. While processing animal-to-human motion retargeting, lengths were adjusted for upper limbs of intermediate skeleton to reach the ground. An adaptation principle for end-effector based on adjustment of root's position was introduced in this paper, position of the constrained end-effector was computed by this principle, height of root should be adapted to ensure all limbs were above the ground. Our algorithm can apply to real-time motion retargeting between characters with the same or different topological structures, Phenomena of limb hang-in-the-air, footskate and limb penetrates through the ground are eliminated.Secondly, motion transition was researched. First, retargeting is required to normalize motion data. After that, skeleton will be created in different ways according to whether topological structures of characters in motion transition were the same or different. Finally motion data of transition frames will be computed and the transition motion will be constructed. Our algorithm can apply to real-time motion transition between characters with the same or different topological structures. Phenomena of limb hang-in-the-air, footskate and limb penetrates through the ground are eliminated.Finally experimental platform was established using MFC and OpenGL, real-time motion retargeting and transition between characters with the same or different topological structures can be achieved, foundation for further study is established.
