The technique of computer character animation is one that aims at creating character animation by the knowledge of computer graphics and computer vision, and one that can be applied into many areas. Recently, with the development of motion capture and motion editing, many algorithms have been advanced. In this paper, we discuss the techniques of computer character animation, motion capture, reuse of motion capture data and motion retargeting. Based on these theories, we present a method of retargeting motion sequence from one character to another character. We import the motion data gained by motion capture and generate the cubic B-Spline curves by fitting to represent one of the DOFs of one joint. At last, we solve the spatial-time constraint based non-linear optimization to get the result motion sequence. To verify our thoughts, we develop a prototype system: Motion Edit, Synthesis and Choreography (MESC).In chapter one, we reviewed the history, current situation, and application areas of computer character animation; we introduce the techniques of reuse of motion capture data and motion editing, based on which, the object of our current research is introduced.Chapter two gives a survey of the related techniques of reuse based on motion capture data and motion editing: editing principles, overview of motion reuse, architecture of motion reuse and editing and motion database construction We focus on the principles and theories.In chapter three, the basic idea of motion retargeting is presented. Firstly, we describe some concepts of character animation and motion editing. Secondly, we analyze the data structure and critical algorithms of our retargeting system. Thirdly, we give the retargeting approach of motion capture data.Chapter four gives the approach of retargeting operations of two character model, which have the identical structure. We introduce the idea and process of implementation. At last, we give some samples and discussion.To validate the feasibility of the proposed techniques, in chapter six, a prototypesystem of motion retargeting is implemented. We introduce the architecture, data flow, data structure of the system. Some examples show that the system works quite well. Finally, chapter seven summarizes the main contributes of our work and furthur work under improvement.
