Energy consumption of electronic devices has become a serious concern in recent years. The technical field of Power management based on portable device is necessary to lengthen the battery lifetime in portable system, as well as to reduce the operational costs and environmental impact of stationary systems. The final scope of power management research is optimization in design and utilization of both hardware and software in order to achieve more energy efficient system.Power Management has become a critical characteristic in recent products. From 1992, the head manufacturers (such as Intel,Microsoft and Compaq etc) have proposed two main PM hardware and software interface standards which are APM (Advanced Power Management) and ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface Specification ). Because Embedded System doesn't have BIOS layer support needed in these standards, the two standards of APM & ACPI don't fit for Embedded System. To resolve the issues mentioned above, the purpose of this thesis is bringing forward to the technical scheme for power management focued on the given platform, which is based on Intel XScale PXA255 architecture, employing ARM linux-2.4.19 as its operating system and Trolltech Qtopia as its graphic interface. Firstly, this paper describes how to supply the low-layer support in the kernel space for the QT power management module. A detailed technical scheme based on Qt/Embedded power management is also described in this thesis, including the LCD and backlight management, and the electric quantities detection. Secondly, this paper describes how to develop the GUI (Graphic User Interface) in order to supply the specific scheme, which meets the user's demand. Finally, this paper gives the system electric testing, analyzing the deficiency in our scheme and proposing some improvements in the future.
