The traditional assembly design commonly relies on worker's experience, the operation is complicated and uses the practicality model, it would cost much time and resource. By using of the virtual assembly, the traditional physical prototype of the product can be replaced with the digital prototype. It can greatly shorten the product's design period, reduce the product's design costs, optimize the product design, improve the assembly quality and efficiency and also be favorable to training. Taking the purifier as an example, the key technology and the methods of visual assembly have been analyzed, On the base of that, the software of visual assembly system has been developed.The technology of modeling has been researched. The model of purifier has been established by three-dimensional software Pro/E, the assembly model has been finished. By using of second-development for Pro/E, combined to the technology of Pro/Program, the parameterized modeling program has been developed, improving the modeling efficiency. Based on Visual C++6.0, combined to Pro/Toolkit which is the second-development tools of Pro/E, Oracle and the MFC, the program of model management has been developed to manage the information of the model. The model data transformation between CAD system and virtual system has been studied, the program of triangular faces tessellating and information acquirement has been developed and the data transformation of purifier model has been completed. In Mockup environment, The assembly process planning of purifier has been researched, including assembly sequence planning, assembly path planning, collision and Interference checking, assembly simulation video making. The visual assembly of purifier has been completed and the video of assembly process has been created, these can make the worker have clear knowledge about the inner structure and assembling sequence of purifier, accordingly to improve the work efficiency. On the base of that, the software of visual assembly system has been developed. Its functions include parameterized modeling for purifier parts, managing the information of the model and saving the information to database, the data transformation between CAD system and virtual system and the assembly process planning.
