Handwriting or sealing signature on official paper documents are characterized by their credibility, Non-forgeability, unreusability, and the signed documents are unchangeable and undeniable. However, electronic documents can be easily copied and altered without any vestige. Digital signatures based on the password key can theoretically guarantee the confidentiality, integrity, authenticity and unrepudiablity. The methods of the conventional digital signatures are unitary in which signature is just byte-related without the context being considered. They cannot be implemented for the part-signature or multi-signature. Meanwhile XML signature based on its tree-shaped structure can be implemented for a unitary-signature, a part-signature and a multi-signature. The method of XML electronic signature is widely applied and has great importance in network offices. Any alteration is undeniable in the process of transmission and confirmation. This paper mainly states the concept, functions and standardization of XML electronic signature. And it explains how the XML electronic signature, taking the place of the traditional handwriting signature on web documents, improves the safety of web documents in the transmission. It can be worthwhile for the research on the safety of document transmission in the electronic government affairs and commercial ones.
