The tremendous advancement in computer graphics and virtual reality technology provides a strong theoretical guidance and technical support for our Digital Olympic Museum (DOM) prototype system. This paper describes the design and implementation of DOM prototype system, and a number of key technologies used in our system.DOM prototype system bases on distributed virtual reality technology, so the users can visit the museum at home through Internet/Intranet, feel the Olympic cultural. The entire system consists of server and client sides. The server side, which is mainly responsible for database access, network listening, and providing users with services such as synchronization and other functions. The client side is mainly responsible for scene rendering, model management, communicating with server side, character animation and the interaction with users. We provide an avatar for each user, who can walk around the museum through controlling the avatar. Meantime, user can see the other avatars, and chat with them. The museum can be divided into four parts. The first part is external scene, which includes the museum's main building and surrounding landscape. The second part displays the torches of all Olympic games. The third part displays the Olympic trophies, medals and the articles of Olympic games. The fourth part mainly displays the gymnasium culture of China, includes the development of ancient and modern sports. Between different floors, we use rotating staircase to connect each other. After implementing the basic roaming function, this paper analyses the existing synchronization algorithm, and present a new one based on the global time, to achieve consistency between different users with tiny cost. At the same time, we adopt GPU technology to implement real-time water simulation with reflection, refraction and time-based disturbance function. These techniques greatly increase the immersion.
