The ideal image acquisition and processing units of the distributed visual inspection system are demanded as small size, low power, low cost, high ability of anti-jamming and the ability of data pretreatment. CMOS digital image sensor has the merits as low power, small size and high level of integration, which can meet the demand of distributed visual inspection system. This paper places emphasis on the application of embedded system technologies in image acquisition and processing unit, integrates the modules as image acquisition, data pretreatment, network transmission to greatly enhance the unit's performance. This paper proposes a program of image acquisition and processing unit solution and verifies it feasibility. Embedded system-based image acquisition and processing unit is more suitable for the application of industrial distributed visual inspection system. After gives a general design of image acquisition and processing unit, this paper goes into detail of hardware and software design of this project. On the hardware side, this paper uses CMOS digital image sensor for image acquisition by analyzing and comparing, and designs Virtex-II Pro FPGA's image acquisition and processing circuit based on embedded system. This paper designs a custom IP core which solves the real-time image data acquisition and storage problem by using visual sensor and external SRAM. On the software side, this paper structures the system platform using internal buses worked with fixed IP core and custom IP core, and designs drivers for correlative IP core. This paper ports Embedded TCP/IP stack - uIP to the system to implement real-time image data transmission based on Ethernet.Based on the design of the hardware and software system, the paper testifies system's design by using laboratory's FPGA design and simulation system. Experiments show that the proposed design is entirely feasible, and the image acquisition and processing unit can achieve functions such as the real-time acquisition, storage and transmission of the image acquired by CMOS digital image sensor.
