A Study On Transformation Of Library Information Service In The Network Environment

Nowadays, China is in a transformation period and the library, as a subsystem of the society, has been influenced by the changes of the society and the development of informationization. Libraries begin to transform accordingly in order to adapt themselves to the changes. As one aspect of the library transformation, transformation of library information service occurs under such backgrounds: the information technology reconstructs the fundamental environment of library information service and digitalizes the library service; various kinds of libraries, in order to meet the challenge from the library service market, begin to enlarge and enrich its own functions of service and management; people's experience of using digital information resources enables them to get new concepts and habits of acquiring information. The thesis is divided into five chapters; it systematically analyzes the transformation of the library information service and probes into the concepts of or measures for the transformation of library information service in the network and digitalized environment.The power of transformation of library information service firstly derives from the network technology and digital publication; secondly, the concept of"customer-oriented"is established in library service and the information users and the requirements of the information users have been increasingly emphasized; thirdly, with the disappearance of the leading position of the library in the social information service system, the library meets the challenge from other information service agencies; fourthly, in recent years, the library system reform lays emphasis on both form and content of the library and the multi-value of the society also plays a part. Therefore, the above forces drive the transformation of library information service to several basic developmet trends. The customers are from regionalization to popularization; the resources are from materialization to digitalization; the items are from single and superficial to multiple and specialization; the means are from manual operation to automation and networking; the modes are from passive to active; the notions are from resource-oriented to requirement-oriented.How to keep the existing and occurring transformation of the library information service lies in the changes of the traditional service resources, operation, notions and management. The measures that can be taken in the network environment include: we should provide richer resources, namely, reinforce the sharing and integration of resources and lay emphasis on the long-term preservation of digital resources; secondly, we should make efforts to establish the customer-oriented digital information service mode, such as the cooperation mode of digital reference service, the integrated mode of discipline service and individuation service mode of active information supply; finally, it is necessary to implement library information marketing and to establish the notions of integrity management, knowledge management, relation management, comprehensive quality management, and we should cooperate with other agencies actively in order to perfect the management machanism.
