IP multicast technology can solve the problem of network bandwidth bottleneck to a large extent. The internet multicast group management protocols IGMPv3 and MLDv2 are important parts of the multicast network. However, their logic structures are too complicated for practical applications. In order to solve this problem, the Huawei Corporation proposed a simplified version of IGMPv3/MLDv2, namely LW-IGMPv3/MLDv2, which has been accepted by IETF as a draft. In this thesis, a suitable platform is established to validate the draft, compatibility test is conducted and relevant MIB for the protocol is designed and implemented.Firstly, the background, advantages and developing trend of IP multicast technology are introduced. The structure and characteristics of the network, along with routing protocols and multicast group management protocol are discussed. And then the importance of MLDv2 in Ipv6 multicast network is described.By analysis and comparison of current router platforms, along with practical requirement, the XORP router is chosen as our developing platform, and its architecture and development environment are detailedly analyzed. According to the requirement of protocol validation and characteristics of multicast service, the test environment including XORP router and Cisco router is also described. The thesis then studies the LW-IGMPv3/MLDv2 protocol. And the mechanism and improvement of different versions of the MLD protocol including MLDv1, MLDv2 and LW-MLDv2 are described, especially LW-MLDv2. On this basis, the thesis detailedly introduces the design and implementation of LW-MLDv2 on the XORP router platform. Also functional and compatibility tests of LW-MLDv2 are conducted. In order to monitor the LW-MLDv2 process status better, this thesis studies and improves LW-IGMPv3/MLDv2's MIB based on the IETF draft "Multicast Group Membership Discovery MIB". The new MIB can express the status of the running LW-MLDv2 process. Also, the design and implementation of the MIB is introduced. The result of testing shows that LW-MLDv2 can effectively support multicast services and be compatible with lower version of MLD. Under certain circumstances, LW-MLDv2 can significantly enhance protocol performance comparing to MLDv2, and it has a fine practical use.In the end of this thesis, the lacking of this thesis and the direction of future research are pointed out.
